they're not kidding. i flew down this at 40mph the whole way!!!

alas

like i told you, one more

more of the san juans

made it

but there's one more!

the san juans

what? how can it be 100 during the day then 34 in the morning?

and this is where i camped 110624

wild camping

since daylight was running out, the bartender -- a young man among men at grumpy's in silverton -- told me to go to the pullout on the left wafter the first hydraulic and find a road leading to some ok camping spots. i found one out of the way, but really didn't need to. it was kind of weird knowing that pretty much no one knew where i was.

silverton

68 actually felt cold

see what i mean

this descent was incredibly beautiful

i would've cried but who needs tears in the way when you're cruising at 40mph. honestly, this was so beautiful that it made the climb worth it

yay. now i'm hungry, very hungry

getting close

the top is just about in the middle of the pic

i suppose this is how red mountain pass got it's name

not even the top yet

a river bridge

ted

ted was pulling a BOB loaded with ham radio gear for a stop on some crazy run where crazies run through a bunch of peaks in the san juans. for all he was pulling, i could not catch him. we meant to meet up at little molas lake, but i could only make it about 4 miles north because of nightfall.

shade

i guess i don't need any that bad!

and there's more

turns out red mountain pass took about 3.5 hours to summit. pretty much all granny gear and always uphill except for about 2 miles of fairly flat -- even that was hard at altitude. my definition of altitude attitude is breathe as deeply as you can, quit thinking about sex, and keep your legs grinding. also, no complaining about anything cuz it was yourself after all that thought this was a good idea.

don't look down

i'll head 'em off at the pass

106!!! is it hot enough for ya?

through ouray

i will cross those somewhere

after pushing into the wind for what seemed an eternity, i made it here

$18, and $1 for the shower. note the shower was the cleanest i've been in since scapoose, or. the laundry facilities were impeccable too. it's the little things.

it does have these however

and this is pretty much all there is to it

i made it, yay

i think this is our nation's newest part, btw

more shade

when you can only find 2 places with shade, you stop regardless. this place had a very nice sitting rock. you may wonder why someone who sits all day for a living would find any rock worthy of being called a nice sitting rock. well, it's broad and flat as apposed to narrow and pointy like a bike saddle. just sayin

the rockies -- laaaaa

shade!!!

climb to black canyon np

it took about 2 hours and was hot, again

if you ever want a good steak in montrose, co

try the red barn

110622 montrose, co

must stop

this was truly the only shade i found all day. thanks for cottonwoods!
