The reason I had to head west and into the prevailing winds is to cross the Columbia at Cascade Locks. Bikes are not allowed on the Hood River Bridge, and I didn't feel like hitching. Plus according to weather.com I'd stay to the west of the local weather front. I like rain and all, but it's a pain when cycling and camping.
